An African Villa, Tamboerskloof, Cape Town

History

The three Victorian terrace houses from which this unusual hotel has been created date from 1894 and Tamboerskloof (literally 'drummers ravine') was one of the first residential areas to be developed at the time, being very close to the city centre. The 'drummers' referred to, were apparently those from the original Dutch East Indian Company corps who were banished to this area to rehearse their sets.

These three old houses are typical of the time and their facades have been preserved to reflect their original charm. The interiors have been thoroughly upgraded and bathrooms added so that from the street, what appears to be three individual houses opens up to reveal a very comfortable modern interior design. Because the three courtyards of the original houses have been joined up, the rear of the hotel has a surprisingly spacious exterior area in which guests can sunbathe by a small pool.

Food & beverage

The hotel offers full, cooked English breakfasts as well as a cold buffet - daily specials are introduced to allow for variety. This meal is included in the rates.

There is an 'honesty bar' which also stocks some 'snacks'. Complimentary cake is on offer throughout the day and port and sherry are offered to guests free of charge in the evenings.

Takeaway menus are found in all bedrooms and there is an excellent selection of restaurants within easy striking distance of the hotel. These offer a range of foods from bistro-fare to gourmet menus. There are two deli's within a block of the hotel.

There is a tea/coffee station with fresh biscuits in each bedroom.

Grounds & Gardens

While very few properties in the central city area of Cape Town are able to offer gardens, the hotel does have a medium-sized, sunny and private courtyard with a small plunge pool. There is no off-street parking for guests but on-street parking is available nearby the front door or within a very short walk and there are street guards at night to keep an eye on parked vehicles - there is no charge for the on-street parking. The owners recommend that a car is rented for only the last night of a visit since most of the 'sights' are within walking distance or a short taxi ride - a 'free call' taxi service is available to guests in the hotel.

Other facilities

There is a library with books swaps, a cosy lounge and large dining room although in summer breakfast is served in a peaceful and sunny courtyard beside a small plunge pool.

The small library offers novels and also guide books to the city. There are two computers here for guest use. (Wi-Fi is available in all rooms as well). Reception is open 24 hours - the owners are in attendance during the day and there is a night-porter on duty throughout the night to assist when necessary. Guests are given a front door code so that they can come and go as they please.
