Ballathie House Hotel, Stanley

Awarded 4 stars by AA and VisitScotland. Here you will find fine Scottish hospitality. The spacious public rooms reflecting the relaxing atmosphere, Master bedrooms with antique furniture and period bathrooms or Riverside rooms with balconies and views over the river. All rooms have private bathroom facilities, bathrobes and amenities, trouser press, hairdryer, freeview TV, direct dial telephone, wireless internet access, radio alarm and refreshment facilities.

 

Local activities include Salmon fishing on the Tay, Golf at Blairgowrie and Alyth, Glamis Castle and Scone Palace, Perth races and distilleries.

History

The Drummond family (Earls of Perth) owned the Ballathie lands in the 17th Century and later sold to the forebears of General Richardson Robertson of Tullybelton. He undertook the building of the current house but unfortunately died in 1883, 3 years before it was completed.

His nephew, Colonel Edmund Robert F. Richardson took over the house, selling it in 1910 to Sir Stewart Coates from Paisley. The house was enlarged by alterations to the servants quarters and a new entrance porch. Central heating and electric lighting were also installed. An army hut was erected for use as a dance hall after WW1 and dances were held for staff and locals. A 9 hole golf course was laid out by the famous golfer, Ben Sawers but sadly this was ploughed up as part of the campaign to provide more food in WW2.

In 1936 the estate was sold to Colonel Stephen Hardie, member of a well-known Chartered Accountants firm in Glasgow and founder member of the British Oxygen Company. Colonel Hardie died in 1969 and the house was purchased by the Maxwell Family from the west coast of Scotland. In 1972.

John Milligan purchased the estate separately in 1998, then also the hotel in 2005. The estate is still used for farming and sports. Recently the hotel has undertaken a comprehensive refurbishment programme befitting a building of such grand style.

The Ballathie Estate is a working farm with a  famous award winning herd of Aberdeen Angus and Charolais. Guests are welcome to roam and take in the views from the river and surrounding countryside of the estate.

The Estate also offers a variety of outdoor sports and activities including walking, fishing, cycling, Sleddog Racing, all just a short stroll from the hotel.

Ballathie House Hotel have a  unique partnership with the Scottish Sleddog Academy.
