History

The pub was named after the landing of a blue hot air balloon in the meadow opposite in the 18th century. Grantchester is one of the most famous villages in the country. Mentioned in the Doomsday Book and by Chaucer, it has inspired generations of artists and musicians, from Ruper Brooke to Pink Floyd. It allegedly has the highest percentage of Nobel Prize winners in its population in the world.

Recently the pub has featured as part of the set for the highly popular TV series Grantchester.

Food & beverage

A full English or continental breakfast is served, and lunch and dinner are also available. The Blue Ball was featured recently in the BBC Good Food online guide, it also was runner up nationally in the Daily Telegraph Authentic Pub Awards in 2019.

There are three other restaurants within walking distance of the pub as well as the famous tea gardens.

Grounds & Gardens

The meadow is just across the road from the pub, giving access to the river Cam, with punting tours from Cambridge and a beautiful river walk into the historic city of Cambridge, Byron Pool is just a mile away and Cambridge is, of course, famous for its college and Botanic garden.

Wifi is available throughout the pub, there is a sitting room for guests, morning papers are provided and there is a sun trap beer garden at the rear and a terrace at the front overlooking the meadows.
