History to the present day

In November 1923 the Catholic Archbishop of Sydney, Michael Kelly and the Bishops of New South Wales issued a pastoral letter that drew attention to the advantages of university education for the Catholic community and announced that a Catholic Women’s College would be built and Sancta Sophia College was founded as a residential college in 1925.

The first students moved into the Hall in its current location on Missenden Road, on 15 March, 1926. There were 23 women in the first cohort of students, three of them student nuns, and 20 lay students. In 1929, the Hall was raised by Act of Parliament to the status of a College within the University of Sydney. It remained under the administration of the Religious of the Sacred Heart until 1991 when the first lay Principal, Mrs. Janice Raggio, was appointed. A detailed history of Sancta Sophia College, Wisdom Built Herself a House by Marie Kennedy RSCJ, was published in 1997 and is available for purchase from the College.

Thank you for making my stay in Sydney to attend a conference enjoyable. I was quite pleased at your selection of dairy-alternative milks.
Ms April H

I really enjoyed my stay at Sancta Sophia College and would stay there again. I hadn't stayed in the area before and found it well serviced by buses in to the city and to circular quay. It was also handy to have the supermarket so close.
Ms Robyn K

Very clean, nice rooms Very good hot buffet breakfast for such a reasonable price Thanks heaps
Dr Shaminderjit K

The room at Sancta Sophia was brilliant. Very clean with excellent amenities and service. Communal breakfast in the students dining room was good. Perfect welcome by the resident manager out of hours. I would definitely recommend.
Mrs Kirsten C

Lovely people who provided key and showed me the room. The room was very clean and everything worked. Very good location for weekend students at the University of Sydney.
Mrs Judith T

Clean; neat, with bar-fridge and microwave [yuk!]; well-serviced by friendly staff; TV, free wi-fi; quiet, when uni students not screeching in corridors, which happens occasionally; Breakfast is only if you like cereal and toast, although there is fruit and veggies - but I did not like it; great Thai restaurant/takeaway and mini-market across road; IRO cafe too, great for breakfast at good price, nice owners, close to King St Newtown and Glebe Rd, Glebe with more restaurants and bars than you could go to in 6 months here. Highly recommended.
Mr Brenton P

Excellent accommodation at a reasonable price. It would have been helpful to know that the airport bus transfer to and from Rydges Hotel (opposite Sancta Sophia College) could have been used. Better information about how to find reception would have also assisted.
