Bellplot House Hotel focuses on providing a stylish and comfortable environment which meets all of your requirements. The Georgian heritage of this Grade II Listed building is reflected in the decor, giving the ambience of a Georgian home, which also provides all the modern facilities expected by today's guests. All of seven bedrooms are bright, spacious and warm. They have en-suite facilities, including walk-in power shower, telephone, satellite television, high-speed broadband WIFI connection throughout, digital TV, direct dial telephones, together with a computer workstation. Tea and coffee are provided, plus the ever useful hair dryer and trouser press.

History

The land for the house was purchased in 1727 and the house was built in 1729 in mid Georgian style. This original plot was "bell shaped" - hence the name, which still holds true 280 years later - Bellplot House. It has a chequered past which includes being owned at one time by a Malaysian rubber planter - Mr. Norman Gowler. However, the deeds show that the majority of the owners were in fact female. The first on record were four spinsters, Anne, Mary, Sarah and Lydia Leman, sisters of John Leman who owned the brewery, then housed in the 'Maltings' opposite the Bellplot House. The next ladies on record were sisters Susan and Florence Spicer, and finally the last owner Rosemary Durie. It is after these ladies that the bedrooms have been named.

Food & beverage

Breakfast is a feast of excellent local ingredients, recognised by both 'Taste of the West' as well as the AA for their 'Best Breakfast' Award.

A lovely feature that makes you feel quite at home is the honesty bar where you can mix yourself a drink either before you head out to the Restaurants or for that last night cap.

Grounds & Gardens

A small herb garden set in a box par terre surrounded by old English roses sits at the front of the House - this south facing garden is a treat in the summer - pull up a chair & smell the lavender.

Explore the area from this well placed town surrounded by many National Trust properties. An Antiques Road Show favourite Forde Abbey is just 3 miles away. Hugh Fernley-Whittingstall River Cottage Restaurant & Farm Shop 4 miles. Explore the World Heritage Jurassic Coast at Lyme Regis, 15 minutes away.

The Somerset Levels are yet a different experience - below sea level, they have a controlled flood in the winter. Completely flat, you can walk or hire bicycles to watch the wild life and wonderful birds nests. Wander slowly through the lanes and fine potter's, weaver's, smoke houses, tea rooms, and ruins of the old Abbey at Mulchenley. Or take the day to travel over Exmoor and discover the North Somerset Coast- a completely different experience to the South Jurassic Coast. Play Golf at Windwhistle Golf Club or have a days pampering and swimming at Cricket St Thomas - approx 1 mile away.

For children a day at Cricket St Thomas Wildlife Park is a must.

Directions:From London: A303 to Southfields Roundabout at Ilminster, take 3rd Exit A358 Chard.

From M5 : Exit 25 signed A358 Yeovil to Southfields Roundabout at Ilminster, take 4th exit signed A358 Chard. Down the hill into Chard, straight at 1st lights. Turn right at 2nd lights - signed A30 Exeter/Honiton. Coming up the hill in the centre of town, the Guildhall is on your left & Bellplot is approx 500 metres up the hill on your right. Look out for the green laurel hedge - pull in through the gates.

From Cornwall & Devon: After Honiton follow A30 signs for Chard & Cricket St Thomas. Coming down the hill into Chard, see the Museum on your left, Bellplot House is 200 metres on your left (if you get to any traffic lights you need to turn round) look out for the green laurel hedge - pull in through the gates.
