Cools Farm B&B, East Knoyle

History

The beautiful landscape around us has barely changed over the last two centuries, but there is ample evidence of past occupation. Eleven bronze age axe heads, remains of a Roman villa, and personal and culinary items from Tudor times have been found in the fields.

The stone mullion windows and fireplaces in our house are carved with initials from previous occupants and you will have your breakfast in our beamed dining room - originally the old kitchen with a large inglenook fireplace and hooks for hanging salted meats.

Just above our land are the remains of Fonthill Abbey, built by William Beckford with monies from his Jamaican sugar plantations. Built at breakneck speed in the 1790s, the spire of this iconic building fell in 1830. By this time, Beckford had retired to Bath where he built Beckford's Tower from which he could see his beloved spire.

Food & beverage

We provide you with the choice of a Full English Breakfast or a continental alternative and, if notified beforehand, we can cater for special diets. You will eat your breakfast off our Wedgwood Devon Rose china in our beamed dining room with its mullion windows and inglenook fireplace.

There are many excellent pub restaurants in the area and we can help you choose the most suitable for you for your evening meal.

Grounds & Gardens

We are completely surrounded by our own land and our large garden provides a place to relax in warmer times. For those who would like to explore our farmland, the long distance Wessex Ridgeway path crosses our land and we allow guests to walk in our ancient woodland with its lake.

Other facilities

We have three self catering units in our grounds - The Old Piggeryin the garden - which consists of a large studio bedroom with a double bed and single sofa bed plus seating and dining areas. It has its own self contained kitchen, shower room and garden with outside dining area in the old pig sties.

Near to the farmyard, the Milking Parlour and adjoining Tractor Shed have been rebuilt to create a bungalow dwelling with three double bedrooms in the Milking Parlour and one double bedroom in the Tractor Shed. They can be rented either together or separately.  The Milking Parlour has its own contained garden; the Tractor Shed has a small terrace area.

Please note, The Old Piggery, Milking Parlour and Tractor Shed can only be booked for a minimum of three nights.

Within a mile are some tennis courts which guests can hire.
