Hill on the Wall B&B, Gilsland

历史

An Act of Parliament in 1555 made it compulsory for everyone living in the twenty-mile wide Border Zone to build their own defences against reivers and cross-border raiders. Not everyone complied but the owners of 'The Hill' did. In 1595 this 'bastle' was built and while it has all the comforts of the 21st century, its original characteristics have remained.

Full English breakfast is served in The Dining Room that contains a large pine table made from the wood of a 17th-century mill. The Long Room, with its log fire and four foot thick walls is a cosy lounge with wood burning stove and views for the use of guests.

Grounds & Gardens

The Hill is situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty with much wildlife on display even the odd red squirrel around the property. Hadrian's Wall is an obvious 'must see' with the National Trail and visitor centres like Birdoswald Roman Fort just a short walk away. The gardens are beautiful with stunning views over the valley.

There is a spacious and comfortable lounge with a wood-burning stove and library for guests. The property provides ample on-site car parking and secure cycle storage for guests, all within one acre of beautiful gardens. Free Wi-Fi internet access available.

All bedrooms include; flat-screen televisions, duck/goose feather duvets (hypoallergenic duvets are available on request), blankets, current monthly glossy magazines, cafeterias with fresh ground coffee, selection of tea, instant coffee and decaf coffee and hot chocolate, a complimentary barrel of biscuits, selection of chocolate items, bottles of water, bathrobes and slippers, hairdryers, use of iron and ironing board,  branded toiletries, which include toothpaste and deodorants, complimentary eye make up remover and cotton wool/cotton buds for the ladies and complimentary shaving balm for the gents.
