The Golden Lion Hotel stands majestically on Senhouse Street at the top of Shipping Brow in Maryport overlooking the harbour and Solway Firth over to Scotland.
The Hotel stands on the site of Ellenfoot House, the first house in Maryport and the residence of the Lord of the Manor Humphrey Senhouse the 1st (1694-1738).
In 1747 Humphrey Senhouse the 2nd discussed with his wife and friends the possibility of developing Ellenfoot and two years later on the 31st January 1747 he renamed the town Maryport after his wife Mary.
