Diocesan Sanctuary 'Our Lady in Need’ / Juliana Monastery

History

History and legend tells us that more than 600 years ago, a merchant ship owner was caught in a violent storm at sea and started praying. In response, he heard the voice of Mary saying, "If you honor me, the wind will turn.” The merchant vowed his commitment. Serendipitously, a local farmer found a statue of Mary in the village of Heiloo. Taking this as a sign from God, the merchant honored this revelation, and built a simple chapel dedicated to Mary. In 1573, however, this chapel was unfortunately destroyed. The current chapel was built in 1930, and is located on the same patch of ground. Now known as Genadekapel (Grace Chapel), it is adorned inside with beautiful murals, whose sweeping biblical scenes catch your attention and are worth the time to study. Also of note, are the stunning contemporary murals, located on the back wall of the chapel.

In the coffee house, ‘t Oesdom, you can drink a cup, visit the souvenir and book shop, and learn the history of this special place.

Grounds & Gardens

The sanctuary is located in a beautiful park, and can be visited by everyone during the day. You can also take a meditative walk along a ‘path of the cross’, with 14 stations representing Christ's passion story.

Other facilities

Opposite the chapel, you will find a well, called Runxputte, whose cold and clear waters are believed to be holy. For centuries, the ill and infirm have traveled to Heiloo, seeking relief from the Sanctuary’s waters, hoping to heal mind and body. Take a sip and judge for yourself! In addition, there is the Bedevaartkapel (Pilgrimage Chapel), which is the largest building on the site, and where a large statue of Mary stands out. Services are held daily in one of the two chapels.
