Lilbosch Abbey, Echt

History

The history of Lilbosch goes back to the end of the 19th century. In 1883, the monks settled here from Achel and in 1912, Lilbosch was formally recognized as an abbey. During the Second World War, German soldiers occupied the abbey and used it as a command post. A German defensive bunker can still be seen from this time, now converted to a Maria Chapel which can be visited. The community belongs to the 'Cistercians of the Strict Observance', also known as Trappists. A small community of monks devote their time to prayer and work. 

Food & beverage

If you walk past the abbey, you can see the farm, which is the abbey's primary source of income. They grow cereals and sugar beets and raise pigs, on a small scale and in harmony with nature. A proud monk said that the Livar pig farm is "a model company, according to the government." The pigs will look at you happily when you walk past them!

Other facilities

There is a small abbey shop with monastic products, run by volunteers. Opening times are limited, check the website for more details.

Guests are welcome for a period of reflection, but due to the limited number of rooms, the guesthouse is often fully booked, especially on weekends, when groups arrive. It is best to make a reservation well in advance. The brothers expect guests to attend at least one of the five prayer services in the church daily, though there is no strict rule. There is a pleasant, old-fashioned atmosphere in the abbey.
