Our Lady of Saint-Remy Abbey, Rochefort

History

The original abbey was built here in 1230. It was often ravaged and plundered, especially in the 16th and 17th centuries, and eventually closed in 1797, during the French Revolutionary Wars. In the following years, most of the buildings were demolished, though, providentially, several ancient sections of the abbey have been spared, including the gateway from the 16th century. Almost a century later, in 1887, the abbey was rebuilt by Trappist monks from Saint Benedictus Abbey in Achel, whose expert craftsmanship and attention to detail is readily apparent to the eye. Many of the buildings of Saint Remy are not open to the public for day visits, as is the case with most Trappist abbeys. However, visitors can enter the beautifully renovated white church from around 1900 and attempt to navigate its the floor-stone labyrinth, modeled after the one in the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Chartres, France. Guests are welcome to stay for a retreat, if they are willing to observe the monastic routine. There are eight prayer services per day, including the night sermon at 3:30 am. Retreat guests are encouraged to attend most of the services.

Food & beverage

The Trappist beer, Rochefort, is known for its complex flavors and strength. The flavor of the beer keeps evolving in the bottle. There are three types: Rochefort 6, 8, and 10 (of increasing fermentation time and complexity), of which Rochefort 8 is the best selling. The monks advise to drink this beer only in peace, so they say. The Trappist brewery was built in 1899, and modernized in 1952. Rochefort Trappist beer is produced in small volumes and difficult to find. Proceeds from sales support the abbey and its mission to help people in need. Take the opportunity to taste these unique and amazing beers! 

Other facilities

Rochefort is a pleasant town with several historical buildings, including the ruins of a medieval castle. In the summer season, a tourist train takes you around town. In the area there is much to see and do in the summer. Of particular interest are the famous Han caves. After a tram ride of four kilometers to the cave entrance, a guide will take you on the extensive tour through several of the caves, highlighted by a light and sound show.
