Postel Abbey

History

The Postel Abbey was established in 1140, with the help of a local nobleman, who endowed a tract of land near Postel to the abbey of Floreffe. A group of Norbertine brothers founded the priory of Postel here, at the junction of several important roads. The abbey has provided many travelers over the centuries a place to sleep in the priory’s inn. Additional donations of land over the years have allowed the abbey to expand and also provide more resources to help the poor. In 1618, Postel became an independent abbey. The greatest setback in the abbey’s history occurred in 1797, during the French Revolutionary Wars, when French invaders forced the monks to flee. The abbey reopened in 1847, and monks began its restoration to its present state.

Visitors like to walk on the extensive abbey grounds, where you can even find a small animal farm.

Other facilities

Before entering the abbey grounds at the white-washed entrance gate, visitors stop at the abbey shop where all kinds of abbey products, including the local specialties, Postel abbey cheese, abbey beer, medicinal herbs, and bread are available for purchase. An information center is also located here.

Also highly recommended, is the collection of special art treasures and very old prints, available for viewing in the abbey library. Guided tours of the abbey are available on request in English and French, and there are also several marked hiking routes in the area.
