SEASON
East African climate is governed by two monsoon seasons: the “Kusi” or South-East Monsoon and “Kaskazi” or North-East Monsoon.
Anytime from the end of March until the end of October sees the “Kusi”, then from November-December starts the “Kaskazi” which lasts until late March.
.
In the main, there are three overlapping fishing seasons on the Kenyan coast:
July to October
– Yellowfin Tuna, Barracuda, Giant Trevally, King Mackerel, Wahoo, Dorado, Bonito, Sailfish and Black Marlin…
.
October to December
– Sailfish are more prevalent, together with Yellowfin Tuna and the other Game Fish species…
.
December to March
– the Marlin season (Black, Blue & Striped), Sailfish with Broadbill Swordfish starting to make an appearance in February ⟹ the Kenya Slam season!

Why you need to fish here
What sets Kenya apart from other fishing destinations is the unique combination of underwater terrain, ocean currents and coastal winds - 55 miles north-east of Malindi are The North Kenya Banks, an undersea mountain chain, home to some of the top predators of the Indian Ocean - Blue, Black, and Striped Marlin, as well as Spearfish and Broadbill Swordfish, perfect for a Kenya 'Fantasy Slam' (5 different billfish species in one trip).
Further, Kenya’s coastline has some world renowned tropical white sand beaches, framed by swaying coconut palms and indented by mangrove-lined creeks opening to the warm, inviting turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean.
