Averbode Abbey is an impressive sight, located on a commanding hill position and surrounded by green and lush forest lands. The quiet and serenity of the abbey's interior contrasts with the busy outside.
To enter, you have to pass through a gatehouse, the oldest part of the abbey, into the courtyard. From there you can see various buildings. Most striking is the beautiful 18th century abbot building on the other side of the courtyard. On the right, is the impressive 17th century abbey church in baroque style. The interior is overwhelming, with beautiful sculptures, paintings, and ornaments. The church is open to day-time visitors, while only retreat-guests are allowed in the abbey. However, between Easter and All Saints Day, the abbey opens its doors to the wider public, offering guided tours of both the abbey and church every Sunday afternoon.
To reach the guesthouse, you need to go up quite a few stairs, but there is also an elevator. The view from some rooms provides expansive views of the surrounding countryside. In the cozy living room, you can meet other guests or read. Guests eat in their own refectory in the guesthouse, and talking is permitted. There is a lot to see in this large abbey, especially the beautifully decorated common rooms.
Groups can reserve the nearby ‘retreat center’ for multi-night stays.
