Highfield House B&B, Kirknewton

Geschichte

Highfield House is a traditional Scottish Manse dating from 1730. As such it is steeped in history as is the whole area surrounding the Manse. It is situated in the village of Kirknewton (approx 10 miles from Edinburgh City Centre) with Kirknewton Church directly opposite.

Kirknewton Parish is situated at the foot of the Pentland Hills. The original Church was founded in 1246 and you are still able view its remains in the burial ground of the present day Church to this day if you so wish.

The new Manse (our house as it stands now) was established in 1750 due to the parish being enlarged. 70 years on we see the Manse itself undergoing enlargement. Here is the ' Statistical Account of 1844' description...

"and this has been done in a manner highly creditable to taste and liberality, the internal arrangements are in commodious accordance, and in external appearance, it is now a very handsome structure, nowise unworthy of the conspicuous and commanding situation that it now occupies."

Essen & Getränke

Breakfast is taken around the large dining room table with the portraits of family ancestors looking down.

It includes fruit from the garden, home made jams and bread. Cooked on the Aga the other ingredients of the meal are free range egg, bacon, sausages, tomatoes, mushrooms and, by request, black pudding, haggis.

There are a number of places nearby for fine dining or pubs for a more informal meal. Alternatively a number of restaurants will deliver to the house.

Dinner is also sometimes available, either a two course supper or the more formal dinner. Please request this in the Additional Information section of the booking form.

Grundstücke und Gärten

Highfield House is surrounded by 3 acres of gardens. Lawns, shrubs, roses and also the potager where the fruits and vegetables for the house are grown. Guests are encouraged to wander around or just sit and contemplate.

There is also an Astroturf tennis court available for the guests and we are happy to provide rackets and balls.

For golfers, in our area alone (Edinburgh & Lothians) we have over 67 courses including some of the best loved in Scotland. St Andrews' famous courses are under 2 hours away.

Holyrood Palace, Edinburgh Castle and many other visitor attractions are all within easy reach. We can also arrange outbound trips with you for touring Castles, Country Houses, Palaces, Distilleries, hillwalking and fishing etc.

We have plenty of off-street parking.
