For 150 years the Cornubia has stood within the heart of Hayle. The building is grade two listed and was built by local brewer Christopher Ellis in 1867 and has hosted many formal functions in its history, including shareholder assemblies for the Cornish Copper Company, public meetings, official dinners, public sales and actions. Ross Poldark may have once crossed the threshold! (We all hope he's real, don't we?!)
The sale of the Copperhouse Foundry's assets took place here in 1875 after the company's commercial failure. It is said that the Cornubia was named either after the Copperhouse built "Cornubia" - the first working locomotive to be designed and built in Cornwall by the C.C.C. especially for the newly completed Hayle railway line in 1838, or, after the Harvey & Co.'s Hayle built steam packet "SS Cornubia" - which was commissioned in 1858 and famed as a blockade-runner for the confederate states in the American civil war. We love either story!
