Old Rectory B&B, Barningham

Geschichte

The Old Rectory was built in 1810.   The Curate lived in the wing which faces west  and opens out onto the Courtyard where the Coaching House is situated.   There is a door from the Courtyard into the Churchyard and from there you can look out over the hills to the moors.   St. Michael and All Angles church burnt down in 1850 and was rebuilt soon after.   Barningham is a very small village, totally unspoilt, with 1 pub, The Milbank Arms and is definitely worth a visit.   Barningham Park gardens are open to the public on certain days during the summer.   A very beautiful garden with some wonderful planting it sits above the snow line and has a steep north facing slope with waterfalls cascading down through colourful beds.   The house dates back to the 14th century.  The top of the village opens out onto Barningham Moor with views over Teesdale, and there are some Cup and Ring stones dating back to the Bronze age 5000 years ago.   All around is wonderful walking country.     

Essen & Getränke

Supper can be arranged when booking and usually consists of two courses but menus can be discussed and preferences taken into account.   Very informal, we eat in the large family kitchen with whoever is staying at the time.   Cost £18.50 each.   Guests are asked to bring their own wine.   There are some excellent pubs and restaurants in the area including three in The Good Food Guide.

Breakfast is taken in the large dining room where the sun pours in (sometimes!)

Tea/coffee/fruit juice.

Fruit/cereals/porridge.

Full cooked English breakfast.

Toast and home made marmalade.

Grundstücke und Gärten

The Old Rectory sits in a half-acre walled secluded garden with views up to Barningham Wood.   Sheltered and peaceful it is filled with herbaceous plants, roses and shrubs.   You can sit on the terrace, take tea and relax and the only sound you can hear is that of the odd tractor going by.

The cobbled courtyard is filled with tubs of geraniums and pleached apples and pears grow up the walls.
