Geschichte

University College (in full, the Master and Fellows of the College of the Great Hall of the University of Oxford, colloquially referred as Univ) owes its origins to William of Durham, who died in 1249. A legend grew up in the 1380’s that Univ was really founded even earlier, by King Alfred in 872. Nowadays, however, William of Durham is accepted as Univ’s true founder, but that still gives University College a claim to be the oldest college in Oxford or Cambridge.

Amongst the most known Alumni you’ll find: Percy Bysshe Shelley, William Beveridge, John Radcliffe, Clement Attlee, Prof. Stephen Hawking, Harold Wilson, Bob Hawke, Bill Clinton, C. S. Lewis and many many more.

Essen & Getränke

Rooms are offered with breakfast included in the price unless otherwise stated.

Breakfast is self-service and eaten in the Great Hall of the College.  A unique experience.

Times for Breakfast:  Monday - Saturday  8.00am - 9.00am, Sundays 9.00am - 10.00am

Grundstücke und Gärten

Considering the central location, Univ’s quiet courtyards and gardens are perfect to relax, read a book or simply enjoy the weather when suitable.

Andere Einrichtungen

Guests staying at the College are most welcome to visit the Shelley Memorial and the Chapel.

The Shelley Memorial houses a statue by Edward Onslow Ford of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, a former member of the college, who was expelled for writing The Necessity of Atheism.  The Chapel was begun in 1640 and consecrated in 1666, with fine Van Linge's stained glass windows and Ante Chapel screen. In 1862 George Gilbert Scott designed a new roof in the Gothic style, a new East window and a stone reredos at the East End.

Our review is dominated by the fact it was a thirty plus degree day/ night when we stayed and this meant the room on the fourth floor was very hot. The window in the room had a safety wire so it only open around two inches. There was a great breeze during the night but we could not catch it. We requested and received a couple of desk fans, which although a godsend, weren't enough to help us achieve sleep. We'd stay again as the room was a good size and the college beautiful, just not it August!

One of the front desk staff members looked quite unfriendly and grumpy at first, which made me feel really anxious, wondering if I had done something wrong. However, s/he occasionally smiled and greeted me, so I felt relieved. The dining hall staff were very polite, and the front desk staff—including the earlier person—were very kind and even showed me to my room. Not only the staff, but also an Oxford student who was staying over helped me out when I got lost. It was such a wonderful memory.

An absolute joy to stay here in such a prestigious place. The grounds, lawns and buildings are so beautiful. The room in a separate block was big, clean and bright. Great place to stay for a short city break and to get a slice of real Oxford. Missed breakfast as my conference started early sadly.

Large, modern room with a window seat and powerful shower. Lovely to walk through the pretty quads and have breakfast in the hall. Only one problem - I couldn't actually leave the building when the porter was away from his desk (locked in). I worked it out. Great stay!

It would be good if the windows could be opened wider to cool down the room in the evenings after a warm day. As it stands, the room felt stuffy. Fix that, and the room gets 5 stars

Lovely stay at University College, the lodge staff were very friendly and helpful, breakfast could’ve been better with more cereals and toppings for yoghurt but was adequate.

Anon

A lovely fully refurbished en suite room, beautiful setting and the staff were so nice. Lots of choice for breakfast too.

Anon

Great central location, friendly staff, and beautiful University surroundings. Thank you.

Anreiseinformationen und Wegbeschreibung

Adresse: University College, High Street, Oxford, Oxfordshire, OxfordOX1 4BH, Großbritannien

On arrival, you need to report to the Porter’s Lodge located in the main entrance. There is a porter on duty 24 hours a day.

University College is located on the south side of the High St, a few yards from the Queens Lane bus stops, and a 10-15 minute walk or a short taxi ride from the railway station.

It is regrettable that parking is not available in college however Thornhill and Seacourt Park & Ride stop outside the college. Guests are asked to respect college staff and property bearing in mind that students and tutors live and work on site.
