A former Coaching House situated in the heart of historic Penryn, 'The Thirsty Scholar' is part of a long history that has seen a brewery or an ale house on this site for more than 600 years and it enjoys an atmosphere that cannot be re-created.
We are the nearest Pub to the University Campus at Tremough, which is less than one mile away.
Our comfortable and freshly decorated en-suite rooms are warm and welcoming, with free wi-fi, TV, tea/coffee making facilities and hair dryers.
Whilst our kitchen is scheduled to open early to mid October there are two spots we can highly recommend for breakfast in Penryn. The closest is Pip's, renowned for their pasties, but also popular for their classic full English, breakfast rolls and pastries. If you don't mind walking a little further there's Muddy Beach where you can enjoy an extensive breakfast menu sat right by the water, or a little further along Commercial Road there's Situ serving a brunch menu with a modern Indian twist.
There are also three take-out restaurants within 100 yards of The Scholar and we invite customers to enjoy their takeaway food at the Scholar where we will be pleased to provide all tableware.
The ambience is informal but welcoming, combining period features such as slate floors, natural timber and a welcoming wood burner, with discreet lighting and a cosy, stylish bar area.
Our large, sheltered garden has a spacious covered area and enjoys views of the river towards Falmouth and the sea. The quaint and picturesque single track railway line that connects Penryn with Truro and Falmouth is just a five minute walk away.
Our welcome attracts locals, University Students and visitors from around the region, in a relaxed and convivial atmosphere
There are a number of good car parking options close by for which we will be happy to provide details on request.
