Histoire

A Grade II listed Georgian town-house (built c.1809-1811). These town-houses were once the homes of the wealthy but many are now converted to hotels and the George Hotel was formed as a result of the uniting of 3 of these buildings.

Cartwright Gardens was originally named Burton Crescent but was renamed to honour an early resident, John Cartwright (1740-1824 and resident 1820-24), a political reformer and military officer. He came to be called the "father of reform" for his advocacy of universal manhood suffrage, parliamentary and army reform, and the abolition of slavery.
