Histoire

One of the newer of the colleges which form the collegiate University of Oxford, St Antony's was founded in 1948 through the benefaction of a successful French businessman - Antonin Besse - who, having made his fortune trading in and around the Middle East wished to use his wealth to establish an Oxford college where students from all around the globe could come to study the social, political and economic histories of different regions of the world.

Espaces verts et alentours

As one of the newer colleges of Oxford University, St Antony's does not have the more traditional "quad and cloisters" environment of many of the centuries-old colleges, although the College is set in pleasant, informally landscaped grounds and gardens, with large lawned areas and many trees. Guests are welcome to make use of the grounds for relaxation and contemplation.

The porters and catering team were lovely, but room service was inconsistent. Used towels were sometimes folded and put back, and I had to ask the porters for clean ones. Tea, milk, and sugar were not replenished more than once, including from Friday to Monday; the porters could only help on one occasion. Despite the good variety of jams, there was no honey, a healthier option that would have suited both guests and the summer school children who were also housed in this College during my stay.

My room at St Anthony's College was ideal for someone looking to stay in the centre of Oxford on a modest budget. The lodge porters when I checked in and checked out were friendly and helpful. As one would expect from a student room, it was functional rather than luxurious, but clean, and provided with tea/coffee-making facilities, complimentary toiletries, and an ensuite bathroom. A decent breakfast was provided with cooked food available, as well as toast, croissants, and fruit.

Facilities in both rooms good, very happy with double bed in room 5 but uncomfortable single bed in room 7. Toilet flush problematic in both rooms, and toilet seat in room 7 didn’t fit bowl. Aside from these, friendly staff in lodge and at breakfast, and happy with value for money given excellent location.

I would have liked to have bathroom amenities everyday. I asked for them one day but there were just shampoo and a small soap bar. The rest of the stay was just perfect: people were nice and helpful. I really appreciate that.

When I arrived at the College they could find no trace of my booking, but luckily I had a print out of your booking confirmation email and they were able to give me an 'emergency' room in college - which was all fine

On arrival in College, you should call at the Porters' Lodge from where you will be directed to your room(s). The Lodge is open 24 hours, but if you are intending to arrive after 11.00pm please let the Lodge know in advance. You will find the telephone number on your booking confirmation receipt. 

Directions:

Guests arriving by foot or by taxi will have no difficulty in finding the discreet entrance on Woodstock Road, north of the city centre. By Rail: If arriving in Oxford at the railway station or either of the bus stations, the short (less than 5 minutes) taxi journey to the College is the recommended option.

By Bus: The bus from the Pear Tree Park and Ride - just off the A34 and the A40 Ring Road at Wolvercote - passes St Antony's front door: just ask the driver to drop you at St Antony's.
