Überblick

Duchy House liegt in der Nähe vieler beliebter Sehenswürdigkeiten wie Somerset House, der Courtauld Gallery, dem Lyceum Theatre, South Bank London, Covent Garden, Leicester Square und der Oxford Street. Dank der hervorragenden Verkehrsanbindung ist es zudem leicht erreichbar. Fünf U-Bahn-Stationen befinden sich im Umkreis von 800 Metern und zahlreiche lokale Buslinien sind ebenfalls gut erreichbar.

Ein vierstöckiges Gebäude aus dem 19. Jahrhundert mit Doppel- und Einzelzimmern und Aufzug. Gäste können zwischen Zimmern mit eigenem Bad und Standard-Einzelzimmern (mit externem Bad, das mit einem weiteren Gast geteilt wird) wählen.

Duchy House liegt an der Kreuzung von Strand und Waterloo Bridge (der Gebäudeeingang befindet sich zwischen dem Restaurant Leon und dem Café Nero auf der Waterloo Bridge (Postleitzahl WC2R 1HG) und gegenüber dem pulsierenden und belebten Covent Garden. Obwohl der Straßenverkehr und das nächtliche Treiben in diesem Teil Londons ein Lärmproblem darstellen können, sind die Fenster aller Schlafzimmer mit Doppelverglasung ausgestattet. Gäste, die sich einen ruhigeren Aufenthalt wünschen, sollten daher im Abschnitt „Zusätzliche Informationen“ des Buchungsformulars ein „nach hinten gerichtetes Zimmer“ anfordern, während Gäste, die auf den Strand und das Lyceum Theatre blicken möchten, ein Zimmer „zur Straßenseite“ anfordern sollten. Bitte beachten Sie, dass nicht alle Wünsche berücksichtigt werden können. Die Zuteilung erfolgt vorbehaltlich Verfügbarkeit und Auswahl des Zimmertyps.

Geschichte

Duchy House is operated by The Courtauld Institute of Art (the world's leading centre for the study of art history, conservation and curating) as a Halls of Residence during the academic year for Courtauld students, though rented privately throughout the summer period (June to September).

Offering self-catering accommodation with a communal kitchen on each floor. Each kitchen is equipped with cooking appliances (hobs, oven, microwave, kettle, toaster, and a selection of crockery). A small Tesco Express Supermarket is located just across the road, with Boots the Chemist less than a minute away.

For those wishing to explore there are many restaurants and bars close by. Covent Garden is only a 5-minute walk from Duchy House with Leicester Square a further few minutes from there. Another 5-minute walk and you're across the river, where the Southbank offers dining as well as some of London's leading cultural venues.

Duchy House is secured by a card key entry system covering both the main entrance door and internal corridor doors. All bedrooms have individual key locks and the property has 24-hour CCTV coverage, thereby making Duchy House a safe place to stay.

All bedrooms are equipped with double or single beds, a wardrobe with a full-length mirror, desk and chair and a small fridge. Complimentary bottled water, hairdryer, towels and basic toiletries are provided. Please note there are no lockable safes for valuable items.

The info sheet in the room said rooms will be serviced daily. But my experience was that no putting out the clean-room sign, no cleaning. And even if did put out the sign, there seemed to be no cleaning on Sunday (understandable, but wish for specification if this was the case), or when they were busy with check-in guests. The office did not have stock for towels, but did for toilet rolls. Still, the location with such price is unparalleled. Visitors just need to be more prepared.

My son and I stay at University locations in the summer, this time we had two single en-suite rooms at Duchy House, fourth floor. It worked very well for us, and we thoroughly enjoyed being in this part of London. It’s university accommodation, not the Savoy, so it’s plain and simple, clean, all you need. Useful small fridge in our rooms. Lift available. Helpful staff in reception. We would definitely choose to stay here again.

Wonderfully helpful young people "on the desk" at all hours -- gave me a feeling of safety and support. But it's the first time I've stayed somewhere that did not have a cafeteria or common room and where I never met another visitor. Missed the camaraderie I experienced back in pre-covid days -- which is last time I had booked "universityrooms" UK trip before this.

Very pleasant and welcoming staff. Excellent location. Good kitchen facilities but couldn't find the cups. Room good value but I found the doors very heavy to negotiate (probably designed for safety rather than ease). Would definitely book again.

Very good location. Staff really friendly. Good kitchen facilities, but the most awful smell. I would stay again, but not during a heatwave. Room stifling hot and fan did nothing to help.

How to find Duchy House:

Duchy House is close to several underground stations, with directions for some listed below:

Temple (District/Circle Line) - Exit the station and turn left. Walk up the stairs then turn left onto Temple Place. Cross the road and turn right onto Surrey Street. At the end of Surrey Street turn left onto the Strand. Continue walking and you will reach the corner of Strand and Lancaster Place. Continue around the corner and you will find the entrance to Duchy House

Covent Garden (Piccadilly Line) - Turn left upon exiting the station then take the first right which is Long Acre. Continue down Long Acre and take the first right onto Bow Street. Walk on the left-hand side of Bow Street. At the end of the road use the traffic lights to cross onto the Strand. After crossing the road Duchy House will be on the corner of Strand and Lancaster Place. Continue around the corner and you will find the entrance to Duchy House.

Embankment (Bakerloo, Northern, District/Circle Lines) - Take the exit on the left when leaving the station then walk straight ahead along Villiers Street. At the end of Villiers Street turn right onto the Strand and continue walking. As you reach Lancaster Place (Waterloo Bridge) you will need to cross the road. You will see the entrance to Duchy House in front of you as you cross (it's between Cafe Nero and Leon Restaurant).

Charing Cross, Holborn, and Waterloo stations are also within 10 minutes walking distance of Duchy House.
