Overview

All Hallows Guesthouse is part of the Shrine of Julian of Norwich, a unique urban retreat in the heart of the fine city of Norwich. Built as a convent originally, All Hallows was fully refurbished in 2022 and offers a selection of single, twin and double bedrooms some of which are garden view overlooking the church and cell of Lady Julian, a medieval mystic and anchoress who lived at the church over six centuries ago and became the first woman to write a book in the English language.

As well as their comfortable bedrooms there is a selection of shared toilets and showers, and a well-equipped self-catering kitchen, study library, comfortable sitting room, and private house chapel. The house gardens are also available to guests throughout the year, and provide a thriving wildlife sanctuary in this urban setting. Next door is the Julian Shrine visitor centre, and the house gardens also adjoin the larger churchyard garden providing additional green space and a quiet refuge from the city.

All Hallows is a short walk from either Norwich Cathedral, or Norwich Castle and Market, with the city centre less than ten minutes away on foot. Ideally placed for travel in Norfolk and Suffolk, there is also good train links to London and elsewhere in the country, with the railway station only a short walk away.

History

All Hallows Guesthouse was built originally as a convent for the sisters of the Community of All Hallows, who have a long-standing connection to Norwich and in particular the Shrine of Julian of Norwich of which the guesthouse is now a part. After St Julian's Church suffered war damage, the sisters raised money to have it restored and built All Hallows next door to be more closely involved with the shrine. This connection has continued, and after the sisters dispersed in 2018 the house was fully refurbished for use as a pilgrim guesthouse for those visiting the shrine or staying in Norwich.

Julian of Norwich was born in 1342 and after receiving a series of 16 divine revelations in 1373 she made the decision to become an anchoress attached to St Julian's Church where she lived and wrote the first book written in English by a woman. After her writing was rediscovered in the early 20th Century she quickly became well known around the world for her spiritual insights, and her Shrine now attracts visitors from across the globe, including many who choose to stay at the Shrine's retreat house, All Hallows Guesthouse.

For other meals, there is a large, well-equipped self-catering kitchen available to guests who wish to do their own cooking.
