History to the present day

The College transferred to Oxford from Birmingham in 1886 and became a Free Church centre for the study of theology, preparing students from any dissenting denomination for the ministry.

Building work began on the current college site, which was purchased from Merton College in October 1886 and was completed at a cost of £40,000 in October 1889.  The original Gothic style buildings are regarded as amongst the finest work of the prominent Victorian Architect Basil Champneys.

Mansfield admitted its first female student, Constance Todd, who later became the first woman to be ordained to the Christian ministry in Britain in 1913.

Mansfield College became a Permanent Private Hall in 1955 and received a Royal Charter in 1995, becoming a full college of the University of Oxford.

The College is a small, friendly college with about 400 students and 70 staff, some of which belong to the Senior Common Room.  It has a reputation within and beyond Oxford of encouraging applications from the state sector and in particular from students in Further Education.

Really good experience altogether. We thought the college was very attractive, well located and had a lovely atmosphere. The staff that we came into contact with were friendly and efficient, and the breakfast was good and had a wide variety to choose from. We have two young children and they had a wonderful time too; most importantly, we felt that children weren't unwelcome or inconvenient to the establishment, which is often the case with the hospitality industry. Thank you for a lovely stay.

I especially enjoyed the experience of living "on a staircase". Would definitely recommend.

I was very pleased with the service and standard of accommodation. Obviously, the rooms are student ones and therefore fairly plain. However, it had all I needed with a bed, tea and coffee making facillities and whilst the bathroom was not luxurious, it was clean and functional. I had not checked beforehand whether my room was ground floor as I use a walking stick and am not as fit as I was. The porter was extremely helpful and changed my room to a ground floor one. He also kept our luggage after checkout in the morning until it was time to leave. The staff in the cafeteria were extremely helpful and breakfast was good. I would recommend it to anyone, basic, but good value and I would certainly go again (after checking my room was ground floor).

Overall stay was very memorable. I felt very safe and secure.

It was amazing overall. In particular I would like to express my thanks to the porter since he was super friendly and also to a member of the staff who let us see the chapel and also some of the dining rooms after breakfast (it felt like being in Harry Potter!). Amazing staying overall. I loved it.

We had a lovely stay. Mansfield College was the only College we could find that allowed children - and our 2 year old truly enjoyed himself. The porters were lovely, the breakfast fantastic, the surroundings inspiring and the stay magical. Thank you!
Mr Martin H

Very happy with all aspects of my stay. The booking procedure, good reception and excellent accommodation.

Fantastic place to stay in Oxford! Low key and basic, but provided everything we needed, in a great location, and it was much more enjoyable than staying in a hotel.
