History

It is recognised that Dunster is one of the most perfectly preserved medieval villages in England, with its origins dating back to the times of Bronze and Iron Age Britain. The Yarn Market Hotel is in the heart of this village, overlooked by Dunster's fairy-tale castle.

The Domesday book mentioned various corn mills in the area. Two of these, called Newmylle and Nethermylle, were combined in 1620 into a mill that is still operating today. The organisation of the woollen industry varied, but by the 17th century, it was centred around wealthy clothiers and independent spinners, which resulted in Geoffrey Luttrell, in 1601, building The Yarn Market in the High Street, which is just outside the Yarn Market Hotel.

Food & beverage

Full English Breakfast is included in the room price.

Dine in the Gables Restaurant, offering home-cooked food with a variety of choices, catering for all tastes and dietary requirements. The ambient surroundings enable guests to relax and unwind at the end of the day. Dinner is provided at additional cost. Open daily 5.30pm to 8.30pm and 5.30pm to 9.00pm Friday & Saturday.

Other facilities

For those looking for a touch of adventure, the Yarn Market Hotel provides holidaymakers with special breaks to cater for all ages and personalities. This year alone the property are hosting a jazz weekend, art and music workshops, jewellery-making and a murder mystery weekend.

Its surrounding location is absolutely superb walking country. Surprisingly hilly in parts, one can also find a gentler walk as well. The scenery on Exmoor is permanently changing as one walks along. Deep wooded valleys open up to wide expanses of moorland. Exmoor’s coast is spectacular with some of the highest cliffs in the UK. A selection of guides is available to lead these walks, with the added benefit of not needing to worry about navigation or finding the most interesting routes.
