Overview

Set in 42 acres of open parkland in the north-west corner of the city, Churchill College's location is a ten-minute walk (or a short bus ride) from the historic city centre. Parking, which is at a premium in this city, is free, however, please note, it operates on a first come first serve basis and cannot be reserved or guaranteed. Please note, the College cannot accommodate pets.

Whilst not old like some other colleges, the light, generously proportioned rooms fulfil the needs of the modern traveller, including a spacious desk and free WiFi, a hospitality tray and toiletries.

With the increasing trend for card payments, the College has become cashless. All payments at the College bar and in the Dining Hall should be made by card from this date. All cards, except American Express, will be accepted.

Check in: 15:00 (3:00pm) Onwards (arrivals may be allowed outside this window if your travel plans can't be adjusted however this is subject to availability)

History

Founded in 1958, Churchill College is the National and Commonwealth Memorial to Sir Winston Churchill. Nobel Prize winners Francis Crick, discoverer of the structure of DNA, and Anthony Hewish, the discoverer of the pulsar, were amongst its founding Fellows.

Food & beverage

The Dining Hall is open daily during the following hours:

Breakfast: 07:30 – 09:30

Self-service lunch: 12:00 – 14:00

Self-service dinner: 17:45 – 19:15

Please note this is not self-catering accommodation, the student kitchen facilities are not for external guests.

Grounds & Gardens

The spacious grounds are home to an extensive collection of contemporary sculptures from a variety of well-known artists. They provide the perfect backdrop for an hour or two relaxing in the sun with a cool drink and a good book.

Other facilities

Additional facilities for residents include on-site laundry, an all-day bar and café (subject to some restricted opening times) and sports facilities including squash and tennis courts and a multi-gym. Sports equipment, hair dryers can all be borrowed from the Porters' Lodge. Irons/ironing board can be found within the Laundry facilities. WiFi is available via the UniOfCam-Guest network. When connecting via this network you will be asked to register by email. Once you have done this, you will be sent an email and asked to confirm the request. If you do not have access to your emails to confirm the registration, please ask for a WiFi ticket at the Porters’ Lodge. There are designated outside smoking areas in College, please ask the Lodge upon arrival. Smoking in the bedroom is prohibited and a £100.00 fine appies if not adhered to.

Only had breakfast so difficult to really comment on the food. The ensuite bathroom light turned itself off after a few seconds and then back on again which was a bit disconcerting. Overall it's a lovely place to stay and we were very well looked after. Definitely plan on staying again when we visit our son who is studying at Churchill.

Churchill delivered what I wanted and expected, a comfortable and convenient room. The shower was excellent and everything worked. The lunch and dinner meals offered a reasonable choice, were good and great value. Very happy with the two days and would certainly stay in college again.

Room was basic but was really big and has kettle to make tea/coffee. Bathroom was great with the heated towel rail and powerful shower. Not sure if the heating actually came on despite the thermostat being turned on. Bed was comfortable and I slept very well.

Staff at Porters Lodge very nice and resourceful and helped me mend my shoe with great enthusiasm! You are the best! Bathroom radiator and towel-dryer didn't work. Bathroom was really cold. Room was warm though. Proper breakfast served!

Room clean and comfy. No hot food at breakfast during term time but good choice of cereals, fresh fruit, pastries etc. Lunch good and excellent value. All staff helpful and friendly.

Lovely to see Baz and the crew in the porters lodge again - they were super helpful, as ever. A nice, quiet room, a comfy bed and a good breakfast - great!

We have stayed at Churchill a few times now and cannot fault it, ideal for getting out and about in Cambridge, just a 10 minute walk to the city centre.

Lovely, fresh, excellent housekeeping. Beautiful architecture of Cowan House. Perfect for a stay in Churchill and for access to other colleges nearby.

Both Check-In and Check-Out are dealt with at the Porters' Lodge. Check-In is available from 15:00 anytime, Check-Out time is 10:00. Rooms not vacated by 10:00am on the day of departure will automatically be charged a £30.00 late check-out fee. Lost key replacement charge is £30.00.

There is plentiful free parking on site. However, please note spaces cannot be reserved, it operates on a first come first serve basis.

From the City Centre

Storey's Way is the second turning on the right as you come out of Cambridge along the Madingley Road to the M11 and A428. This junction is marked with a traffic island in the middle of the road. Turn into Storey's Way and Churchill College is on the left.

Arriving by Rail

Cambridge railway station has a frequent service from London Kings Cross, the Midlands and the North and a direct link from Stansted Airport, as well as plentiful local services. Cambridge railway station is situated only 2 miles from Churchill College.

Arriving by Bus
