Visión general

A perfect start on your venture on the Wild Atlantic Way, Cashel House Hotel overlooks the majestic Cashel Bay on the west coast of Ireland. Here a traditional welcome awaits guests in this classic country house retreat. Built-in the 19th century this gracious country home was converted to a family-run four-star hotel in 1968 by the McEvilly family. Situated in the heart of Connemara and nestling in the peaceful surroundings of 50 acres of gardens and woodland walks this little bit of paradise offers an ideal base from which to enjoy walking, beaches, sea and lake fishing, golf and horse riding. Cashel House is a Pet-Friendly Hotel. Cashel House is located 8 miles from the beautiful fishing village of Roundstone, a beacon for artists and naturalists. The buzzy town of Clifden and nearby Kylemore Abbey & Gardens are less than 25 minutes drive from Cashel House. Cashel House is the ideal location for exploring the Aran Islands. Cashel House Hotel is one of the founding members of ‘Ireland’s Blue Book’ [Irish Country Houses, Historic Hotels & Restaurants] and we welcome Blue Book Vouchers.

Historia

Geoffrey Emerson, who is said to have designed it for Captain Thomas Hazell, built Cashel House, a house with asymmetrical gabled elevations, in 1840. Geoffrey Emerson is a great, great grandfather of the present owners. The Hazells were English Landowners and were also agents for a Scottish firm buying Kelp – a type of seaweed. The old Kelp store still stands by the pier opposite Doon House. Captain Hazell and his Wife celebrated their 40th Wedding Anniversary at Cashel House in 1885. The Rose Hedge out side the Bar is said to be his present to her on that occasion. Mrs Hazell laid out a lot of the Gardens and planted many of the Flowering trees and Shrubs that you see today. From 1919 to 1951 Cashel House was the home of Jim O`Mara T.D. and his family. Jim O`Mara was the first official representative of Ireland in the United States and he devoted his life and talents to make Ireland a nation. Jim O`Mara was a keen botanist and found happiness in Cashel House. In 1952 Cashel House became the home of Lt Col and Mrs Brown Clayton, formerly of Brownes Hill in Carlow. During their time at Cashel House the Browne Clayton’s had Harold McMillian, the late British Prime Minister, stay as their guest. The Browne Clayton’s also gave the Garden its notable collection of Fuchisas. Dermot and Kay McEvilly purchased Cashel House in 1967. Total refurbishment began immediately, with a fine collection of antiques being added and offering all modern facilities. The house reopened in May 1968 and ‘Cashel House Hotel’ was born. Prior to the McEvilly`s acquiring the house Lt Col Browne Clayton had been ill for a number of years. During this time the Gardens had become overgrown, the restoration of which is still ongoing. The original house was preserved by the McEvillys`s and any additional building was done to the side and rear of the main house to maintain its original elegance. Cashel House Hotel is still owned by the same family today. It was in Cashel House that the late General and Madam De Gaulle of France spent two weeks of their Irish holiday in May 1969.

Terrenos y jardines

OVERALL WINNER OF THE ‘NATIONAL GARDEN AWARDS’ - Small private beach. The gardens at Cashel House Hotel are a place of profound beauty, a place of meditation and relaxation, which benefit from the warmth of the gulf stream. Blossoms galore welcome spring in all its glory! Benches are located throughout the garden for rest and reflection. Withdrawn and quietly secluded, the gardens are a delight with their enchanting cultivations of exotic and exquisite flowering shrubs – many imported from Tibet – including rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias and the rare beautiful magnolias. Lists of rare trees are available at reception. Our guests may walk along the seashore, through woods and streams and eventually onto the summit of Cashel Hill where the breathtaking views of sea, sky and coastline are well worth the climb. We also boast our own herb garden. No chemicals are needed to encourage growth as a mixture of seaweed from the beach, combined with a few secret ingredients, are used as a magnificent fertilizer!
