This luxury 4 star, privately owned, Full Service hotel is conveniently located in the heart of Brentwood just minutes from the M25/J28. Reach Central London or the main London Airports, by car, in less than one hour. Close to Brentwood Main line station and within easy driving distance of Lakeside and Blue Water shopping centres. Well appointed, comfortable, air conditioned rooms provide the perfect base for the busy executive, with work desk and high speed internet access. Wi-Fi is available in all public areas. Conference rooms available for hire. Leisure guests will enjoy the tranquil setting and old world charm of this historic building.

Guests can relax in our extensive bar/lounge area where a selection of light meals are available. Alternatively enjoy a fine dining experience in the award winning Tudors Restaurant where you can choose from our Du Jour, A la Carte or Chefs Tasting Menu. Free onsite parking is provided for up to 100 cars.

Historia

Since the early 13^th century, continuous sequences of quite prestigious timber- framed single residences have existed on this site. The first owner, Sir William de Bruyn, a neighbouring manorial Lord, created the small Manor of Brook Street of some 150 acres centred on the hamlet, which lay alongside a lively brook and Roman Road. This estate was managed from the house, which was surrounded by a large rectangular moat. Succeeding generations of the de Bruyn family and the families of Tyrrell and Harleston maintained an interest in Brook Street until the mid 16^th century.

In the late 15^th century, a family named Roper farmed the Manor of Brook Street and Henry Roper greatly enhanced the moated house, which he called The Place. He became an important officer in the royal household of Catherine of Aragon, the first wife of King Henry VIII and it seems likely that both she and her husband were visitors to The Place. After the death of Henry Roper, The Place remained in his family until the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII when the chantry and it’s land came under the jurisdiction of the Duchy of Lancaster. Soon afterwards, John Wright of nearby Kelvedon Hall, held The Place and 80 acres of the Chantry lands and one of his sons, Robert, actually lived there.

Robert gave the name Brook Hall to the moated house and in 1535 named the estate the Manor of Mary Green after his new bride. This branch of the wealthy Wright family lived in the house for nearly 200 years during which time it was renamed the

Moat House and was considerably improved and modified in accordance with changing designs and fashions. The House as it stood around the year 1580 during the time of Robert and Mary Wright, is the essential core of the old house we see today. The famous diarist Samuel Pepys was a friend of the Wrights and probably knew the Moat House from his many visits to the area in the 1660’s. Some members of the Wright family emigrated to the New World between 1630 and 1640 and it seems that two of their descendents, Wilbur and Orvill Wright, were the famous pioneers of air flight.

After the Wrights, from 1723 until well into the 19^th century, the story of the Manor of Mary Green is mainly one of absentee landlords and yeoman farmers. Various owners made improvements to the house during that time and in 1840 the railway track was driven through part of the land. Over the next century, the house was the elegant home of businessmen and others, retired or otherwise. During World War II, the house was requisitioned for use by the Army and in the 1950’s was given a facelift by the removal of the external plaster to reveal the original timbers as they were at the time of Robert and Mary Wright.

The house first became a hotel in 1968 and with the construction of the additional buildings in keeping with it’s Tudor tradition, was called The Moat House. In 1994, the ownership of the hotel was acquired by the then manager Paul Pearson who reverted to the old name Marygreen Manor.

Winner of “The Best Hotel restaurant” in the 2009 Essex Food & Drink Awards, Tudors Restaurant is set in The Baronial Hall of this original 16th century Manor House. With its warm interiors and high beamed ceiling Tudors offers the perfect setting for any occasion and is ideal for corporate entertaining. Tudors offers international cuisine from our stunning a la Carte and Du Jour Menus, complimented by the award winning wine list. Period rooms are available for private dining. Guests can relax in the bar area before and after dinner.

The Tudors restaurant is closed for Dinner (evening) on Sundays and Bank Holidays - Residents Menu Available

The garden here at The Mary Green Manor really is one of the areas “hidden treasures”. Situated at the rear of this original Tudor Manor House, the garden is an oasis of calm tranquillity.

In early spring the garden is full of the gorgeous scent from our two large wisteria plants that cascade over the tiled roofs of the main house and chapel, framing, on one side, the large ornate stained glass window found in the end wall.

During the summer months guests can enjoy full table service in the garden. Choose from a delicious light meal from our lounge menu, one of our delicious Afternoon Teas or just a long, cool drink.

The majority of the garden is laid to lawn, carefully tended and neatly trimmed, surrounded by borders of cottage garden flowers and traditional favourites adding colour and focus throughout the year.

The conservatory, nestling in the corner of the garden under the dappled shade provided by our large Japanese oak tree, provides the ideal area to enjoy the garden whilst dining with larger groups or enjoying afternoon tea during the winter months.

The delicate sound of the fountain in the large ornamental pond provides a gentle background melody as guest sit and discuss the possible origins of the thatched “mushroom” building found at the lower end of the garden. This original building was, in fact, used for the storage of meat long before the invention of refrigerators with built in drink dispensers!

As a popular venue for Weddings and private gatherings the garden has formed the perfect backdrops to many hundreds of photographs over the years, and is featured extensively in many of our advertising and promotional features.

The hotels dedicated smoking areas can also be found in a corner of the garden. It is beautifully landscaped to offer a pleasant smoking area, with its roof offering some protection from the elements!

Over the years the garden has won many awards and we are looking forward to continued success this year!

The instructions below take place within 5 minutes of the turn off from the M25.

Once on the M25 exit at Junction 28 signposted for "Brentwood"
Take the road off the roundabout, signposted for "Brentwood A1023" not the A12.
You should now be on Brook Street.
Proceed straight through two sets of traffic lights.
The Hotel is situated 200 yards on the right hand side.
We are a black and white tudor building set back from the road with a large car park at the front.
