Visión general

Murray Edwards is a modern, inspirational College that is delighted to welcome visitors and offers cheerful, friendly service in a relaxed atmosphere. The college is a pleasant 10-minute stroll over Magdalene Bridge and the river Cam to the historic city centre.

All bedrooms are bright and airy and offer complimentary Fair Trade tea/coffee with biscuits, as well as toiletries, towels and bed linen. Many of the rooms overlook our beautiful informal gardens.

The Porters' Lodge is staffed 24 hours a day and our friendly, helpful Porters are happy to help with any queries you may have.

Full English breakfast is made by our award winning Chefs and served in our beautiful Grade II* listed dining hall.

All rooms are within easy reach of the Porters' Lodge and dining hall.

Some rooms are situated on the ground floor and many bedrooms and most other areas of the College are accessible by lift. There are a limited number of rooms which are suitable for guests with access needs. Ideally those using wheelchairs should be accompanied by a companion. If you require further information on accessibility, please request this in the Additional Information section of the booking form.

Historia

The college was founded in 1954 to enable more women to take places at Cambridge University. At that time, the college had no name and no endowment, so was known as New Hall until June 2008, when Ros Smith (a New Hall graduate) and Steve Edwards gave the college two transforming gifts, an endowment of £30 million and a name, Murray Edwards College.

The college still has all-female students, but we have male Fellows and members of staff. Our unique dining hall, affectionatley known as the "Dome" was designed by Chamberlain, Powell and Bonn and completed in 1965. Most of the original buildings are now Grade II* listed and have undergone extensive renovation.

The college has continued to flourish and evolve and has added exciting new buildings, including the Kaetsu Centre and Pearl House, Canning and Eliza House, (which provides accommodation for our graduate students) and our purpose-built conference centre, Buckingham House.

The College retains the open and "can do" attitude of its early pioneers. All students ask "Why?" but it takes people with a special creative spark to ask "Why not?". Comida y bebida

Full, English breakfast is included in the room cost and served in our main dining hall from 8:00 to 9:00am on weekdays and from 8:00 to 9:30am on Saturday and Sunday.

Although we are not able to cater for lunch and dinner, there is a wide range of pubs offering good food and several excellent Indian restaurants all within a 5 -10 minute walk of the college.

If you just need a snack, we have a hot drinks machine in the main walkway close to the Porters' Lodge and a snack/cold drinks machine downstairs in the bar area.

The college bar is not generally open unless booked for other events happening in college.

Terrenos y jardines

We have beautiful, informal gardens, which our guests are welcome to enjoy. The only garden not available is the Fellow's Garden, which is reserved for the Fellows of the college.

Otras instalaciones

We have a well-equipped gym, which may be used for a nominal fee during your stay. Membership forms are available from the Porters' Lodge. The tennis courts and squash court may also be booked at the Lodge for a small fee.

The college is home to the unique New Hall Art Collection, which contains nearly 350 contemporary works by women artists. The Collection includes works by Maggi Hambling, Barbara Hepworth and Paula Rego. Much of the art work is on display in public areas of the college, so if you'd like to take an informal tour, an information leaflet is available from the Porters' Lodge.

The room was clean, spacious and sparse, but the fan and the welcome box were very much appreciated and used. My lamp was broken and was replaced immediately. The staff members were all very friendly and helpful. The breakfast during the week was tasty and varied. On the weekend, there was not much offered. However, it was still tasty. The biggest problem we had was the late time of breakfast (7:30/8:00 for weekdays; 9:00 for weekends).

Very friendly and helpful porters. Room clean and comfortable. The only downside was the breakfast, as there wasn't much fresh fruit or choice of cereal (but that might have been because of the large number of summer school students staying).

It was a great stay - a note needs to be made with attention to detail around the bathroom cleaning - hairs from previous occupant left :( Overall, staff were wonderful and so helpful and friendly - thank you :)

We had a great time in Buckingham house accommodation for our daughter’s graduation. Spotless clean room, and very welcome attentions : drinks, soap and shampoo boxes. I would definitively recommend it.

To check in, please go to the Porters' Lodge, where you will be give directions to your room, a key and swipe card. Access to the college after 11:00pm is by the main front entrance at the Porters' Lodge.

The College is easy to reach by road, with good access from the M11, A14 and A428. If you're using sat-nav, the postcode CB3 0DR will bring you straight to our main car park on Storey's Way.

The railway station is a 10-15 minute taxi journey away and access from the Park and Ride site on Madingley Road is simple - just hop off the bus on Bridge Street and walk up the hill.

We have parking for bicycles, close to the Porters' Lodge.
